Police seize bicycle spotted on surveillance footage

Posted

Residents across Barrington reported car break-ins last week.

On Monday, April 22, a Whipple Avenue resident told police someone entered her vehicle and her husband’s vehicle during the overnight hours. The resident said a wallet was missing. Police said the vehicles had been left unlocked.

A little later that day, a Manning Drive resident called police after someone rummaged through her vehicle. The resident said surveillance video footage shows someone riding a bike to the home, walking up the driveway and then entering the vehicle. The resident said nothing was stolen from the vehicle.

Police caught a break in the case at about 6:20 that night. An officer was on patrol in the Maple Avenue neighborhood when he spotted a teenage girl attempting to walk a bicycle which was loaded up with a number of items, including a bulletin board and lawn decorations. The officer offered to help the girl and he asked where the items came from. The teenage girl said she found the items in someone’s trash. Police are checking to see if the items were reported stolen. The teenager later told police that she found the bike near Chianese Park. Police seized the bike.

Later that day, a Hilltop Avenue resident stopped into the station to report a vehicle break-in. He said someone stole a license plate, the vehicle registration and other items. Police said video footage from a surveillance camera at the home showed someone arriving outside the house on a bike that matched the bike seized from the teenage girl earlier that day.

Using that information, police identified a suspect in the vehicle break-ins case.

Also on Monday, a Prince’s Hill Avenue resident told police someone entered his vehicle and his wife’s vehicle and stole a flashlight and some loose change.
